The name Vattumadonkaari (engl. Arch of raspberry worm) was inspired by Zachris Topelius’s tale called Vattumato (engl. Raspberry worm). The moral of the story is to always be kind for the smallest of creatures. Looking closely at the figure-ground diagram you can see the raspberry worm smiling. Motored traffic has been separated from the pedestrians to create a safe environment for children and other inhabitants to explore and enjoy their surroundings. The district forms a characteristic village-like area where the long facades of the houses face the passing roads creating a pittoresk and humane street atmosphere. In between the house rows are spaces for playing, living and horticulture.
Communal areas at the district create varying views and scales while playing a crucial part for inhabitants everyday quality of life. The shared building with its four gabled roofs welcome the habitants and their guests into the area. Vattumadonkaari consists of two types of houses. The one floor detached residence is 100m2 with two bedrooms, a living room and an utility kitchen. The one and a half floor house is 150 m2 three bedroom attached residence with a livingroom and a kitchen.
